In the 1974 classic Christmas special "The Year Without a Santa Claus," Saint Nick decides to take a year off. For the characters (and those watching), it was a blue Christmas, indeed.
For many in Central Florida, the blues have returned.
According to today's Orlando Sentinel, the historic Cypress Gardens theme park will temporarily close on Nov. 17 and reopen in March as a smaller, more focused park.
This, of course, means that the park's popular "Old-Fashioned Christmas" celebration, which once boasted the world's largest Christmas tree (a whopping 116-feet tall!), will remain dark this season.
Here's hoping that Florida's oldest theme park can use the hiatus to get their finances in order, and emerge in the spring as a more profitable endeavor.
We'll be first in line next Christmas!

The dates for the fifth annual ICE! attraction have been set.
This year, the attraction will open a few days later than normal, on Monday, Nov. 19, 2007. Consequently, it will close a day later than last year, with its final day of operation being Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008.
Of course, ICE! is part of the Gaylord Palms' Best of Florida Christmas celebration, which will run during the same dates.
Stay tuned for more details.

The Orlando Sentinel reported that Cypress Gardens will admit for free the holders of a season pass to any other theme park in the United States through Dec. 24.
That's good news for season passholders at Walt Disney World, SeaWorld, Busch Gardens and Universal Studios! Hmm. Too bad that all Splendid China season passes have already expired!
This is perfect timing for those who want to enjoy the park's "An Old-Fashioned Christmas" celebration.
More details on the Cypress Gardens website.

What is ICE!? The picture above should give you a good feel. It was used in last year’s marketing materials, and is one of my favorites, due to the dramatic blue lighting.
If you’ve gotten this far, you probably have at least heard of ICE!. But for those who haven’t, here is a rundown of the coolest holiday event in Florida history…
Here’s the short story:
ICE! is a walk-through holiday attraction hand-carved from nearly two million pounds of ice.
Here’s the longer story:
ICE! combines amazing artistry, heart-warming holiday scenes, and a dose of interactivity. Oh, and did we mention that it’s all hand-carved from two million pounds of ice?
These aren’t tabletop banquet carvings, either. Nope. These creations tower above you, surround you, grab your heart and guide you along on a holiday journey you won’t find any place else. The total package overwhelms you… the amazing skill, the dramatic lighting, the holiday music and the special effects.
And, let’s not forget one last thing… the temperature! Nine degrees. Wow… you’re gonna need that free coat we give our guests. Step inside and gasp with delight. If you ever spent Christmas in a northern city, this will take you back to a brisk winter day. If you grew up this side of Atlanta, you’ll finally understand what winter weather feels like to the northerners.
But, honestly, why should the northerners have all the fun?
And for the even longer story (including admission prices, etc.), visit the ICE! website: http://www.gaylordpalms.com/ice
